REFLECTIVE ESSAY ON THE STORY MY BROTHER'S PECULIAR CHICKEN

My Reflective Essay On The story  My Brothers Peculiar Chicken

The story My Brother's Peculiar Chicken is about two boys who found a very peculiar chicken. It was peculiar since no one could tell if it was a rooster or a hen. The story revolves around the two boys trying to figure out what the chicken was. In the story they went to multiple people and asked if they knew what the chicken was.

A scene from the story talks about the two brothers going to the cockpit to let their chicken fight to see if it was a hen or a rooster. Cockfighting is a hobby, sporting event and a gambling instance in the Philippines. To me we shouldn’t let people do this a lot especially now since there is a pandemic. In all Philippine cities, Philippine provinces, towns, and practically every barangay, cockfighting derbies and hack fights rule.

Another scene from the story is when the children went to the “The teniente del barrio chief of the village” to ask if the chicken was a hen or a rooster. A cabeza de barangay or head of  barangay also known as teniente del barrio, was the leader or chief of a barangay or barrio in the Philippines during the Spanish colonial period. For me it’s good to have a chief in a village since they can help the people in the village do work and so there can be someone responsible for the village. And the teniente del barrio was inherited from the first datus who became cabezas de barangay when the many independent barangays became tributary vassals of the Spanish Empire.

Another scene where the children were fighting about the chicken when they were about to eat their dinner and then the parents got involved with the fighting as well. Table etiquette before is that you don't begin to eat or drink until the oldest man or the head of the family at the table has been served and has begun. But for me, families should always eat together so they can spend time with each other. Everyone should be able to eat whenever they want because others might be busy and won’t be able to eat with their families.

In the scene where the two brothers left to go to the cockpit so the older brother could prove to his younger brother that their chicken was a rooster by getting their chicken to compete in the fights that were held on that day. When the fight was over and their chicken had won, the younger brother then agreed that their chicken was a rooster. But to their surprise when the younger brother was carrying the chicken while they were on their way back home their chicken had laid an egg which concluded that the chicken was a hen.
